The number of doctoral degrees awarded at universities and colleges decreased slightly last year. A total of 1518 scientists concluded in 2019, their Habilitation successfully, that was 0.7 percent less than in the previous year, as the Federal Statistical office in Wiesbaden announced on Tuesday.

The number of women with a Habilitation remained with 484 substantially constant (plus 0.2 percent). This corresponds to a share of the habilitations of 32 percent. In 2009, the proportion still stood at nearly 24 percent.

The academic examination of the Habilitation serves as evidence of a special aptitude for teaching and research. With half of all completed habilitation procedure – a total of 797 were represented again in the past year, the subjects of medicine and health Sciences the most. A total of 212 habilitations accounted for the Humanities. On the third place of the subjects followed by Law, Economics and social Sciences 199 habilitations.
