SAS recently completed a polar route flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles as part of The Aviation Challenge (TAC), achieving a significant milestone in reducing CO2 emissions per passenger by almost 20%. This successful flight showcased how careful planning and strategic route optimization can lead to a substantial decrease in aviation’s environmental impact.
By efficiently managing cargo distribution and passenger load, SAS was able to optimize fuel usage for the 285 passengers on board. This balanced load minimized fuel burn, resulting in a fuel-efficient setup. Real-time collaboration with air traffic control allowed SAS to adjust the cruising altitude and flight path, leading to additional fuel savings of 250 kilos and significant emission reductions.
Sustainability efforts extended to ground operations, where optimized taxiing procedures further reduced fuel consumption by over 100 kilograms compared to standard practices. Additionally, 32 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) were used, accounting for 40% of the total fuel on this flight. This significant use of SAF not only lowered emissions but also demonstrated the potential for greener long-haul flights.
While the TAC flight showcased major sustainability gains, SAS recognizes the challenges of implementing these practices on all flights. Constraints such as air traffic path restrictions, limited SAF availability, and varying operational conditions can hinder the consistent application of these methods.
Ann-Sofie Hörlin, Head of Sustainability at SAS, emphasized the importance of achieving nearly a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions and the commitment to implementing these insights across all operations. The Aviation Challenge has allowed SAS to explore new approaches, collaborate with industry partners, and lead the way towards a more sustainable future for aviation.
SAS’s dedication to sustainable innovation in air travel is evident through initiatives like fleet renewal, SAF integration, and optimized flight operations. The airline aims to play its part in creating a more environmentally responsible future for aviation.
