After a journey of about 20 minutes from Trump Tower, the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, has arrived at the Manhattan Court, where the approximately 30 charges against him will be read. The Republican left the building he owned to cheers and applause from his supporters, who had crowded in front of the skyscraper, before getting into one of the 10 cars in the convoy that would take him south of the city.
The great concentration that Trumpism had promised on Tuesday also extended to the vicinity of the court, where a hundred people were waiting with red caps with the quintessential Republican slogan Make America Great Again and the stars and stripes flags.
Before appearing before Judge Juan Merchán, the former US president wrote on his Truth Social social network, describing the situation as “surreal”: “I am going to court. It seems so surreal. Wow, they are going to arrest me. I can’t believe that this is happening in America.”
As reported by the BBC, Trump has entered the court, flanked by US Secret Service officials, through a more discreet entrance, so the media have not been able to see him upon arrival. There he is fingerprinted and photographed, before hearing the charges against him. The former president’s lawyers have announced that he will plead “not guilty.”
Trump will thus become the first president in the history of the United States to be formally charged with criminal offenses that, in theory, could even lead to prison sentences.
