Schwerin (dpa / mv) – The city and community day in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is dismayed by the willingness to use violence against local representatives. “Verbal and physical attacks are always attacks on our democracy, we must not accept that,” said Thomas Beyer (SPD), chairman of the city and community council and mayor of Wismar, on Wednesday. He observes the increasing hostilities with concern.

Beyer showed solidarity with Greifswald’s Mayor Stefan Fassbinder (Greens) and all other activists who had been threatened. He called for the perpetrators to be “punished to the fullest extent of the law,” he said. It goes too far that public officials have to be under police protection and they are met with “pure violence” by fringe groups.
