Stephen Greif has appeared on the theater stage in countless roles and acted in many television series, but also in movies. In the Netflix series “The Crown” he embodied the speaker of the British House of Commons. Now Greif has died at the age of 78.
British actor Stephen Greif is dead. He died at the age of 78. “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our wonderful client Stephen Greif,” the Guardian said in a statement from his management.
“His extensive career has spanned numerous roles on screen and stage, including at the National Theatre, RSC and the West End. We will miss him dearly and our thoughts are with his family and friends.” So far nothing is known about the cause of death.
Born in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England, Griffin attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. After starring in numerous stage productions in the 1960s and early 1970s, he made the leap to screen and television. Griffin landed the role of space commander Travis on Blake’s 7 in 1978. The BBC’s British science fiction television series ran there from 1978 to 1981, a total of four seasons, each with 13 episodes.
Later, Greif appeared in films such as “Spartan” (2004), “Casanova” by Lasse Hallström (2005) and “Shoot on Sight” (2007). He has also had roles in series and soap operas such as ‘Doctors’, ‘Coronation Street’, ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ and ‘EastEnders’.
Greif can be seen alongside lead actor Daniel Brühl in the 2020 US series The Angel of Darkness. Griffin also played the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Bernard Weatherill, in the fourth season of the 2020 Netflix series The Crown accessible; the sixth season will be the last.
Griffin leaves behind his twin sons Joseph and Daniel.
