Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) – In another case of fraud using the WhatsApp messenger service, a 65-year-old from Neubrandenburg lost almost 13,000 euros. As in other cases, her alleged son reported to the woman, the police said on Monday. He claimed to have a new number and texted the woman to ask for urgent transfers for bills.
Over several days, the woman made various transfers. By the time the woman noticed the fraud, the fraudsters’ proceeds totaled almost 13,000 euros – according to the police, an unusually high level of damage from this scam. It is still unclear whether the woman will get at least part back.
The police keep reporting such cases of fraud. Sometimes with modified scenarios that the perpetrators come up with. The police advise that if in doubt, contact the police or relatives on their known numbers.
Last week, the police informed about a case in which a woman had lost 15,000 euros. A wrong bank employee had called the 46-year-old from near Röbel (Mecklenburg Lake District). The victim had unknowingly given the perpetrator access to her account via a link received via WhatsApp.
