Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann hardly comes to watch football himself, according to his own words – but he considers the lost showdown with the world football association FIFA for the “One Love” captain’s armband to be lamentable. Although he was a football fan, he couldn’t deal with the subject because he didn’t have time, the Greens politician said in Stuttgart on Tuesday. But: “Spontaneously, I have to say, I find what FIFA decided to be regrettable.”

The dispute between eight European associations and the world association FIFA over wearing the “One Love” captain’s armband resulted in the teams around Germany or England renouncing the gesture.

A few weeks ago, Kretschmann said that he would not necessarily have awarded the controversial Winter World Cup to Qatar, but still wanted to watch one or the other football game. At the World Cup in Qatar on November 23, Germany will meet Japan in the first group game. The rich emirate of Qatar, and with it the World Cup, have long been criticized for human rights violations and the treatment of workers from other countries.
