Two teenage boys were charged with involvement in the shooting death of a Detroit family that included a 5-year old child.
Police said Tuesday that the boys (16 and 17 years old) were taken into custody after they were found. They are currently being held in a youth home, but they have not been charged.
On Sunday, Caleb, his mother Lashon Marshall and Aaron Benson, her boyfriend, were discovered dead in their home at Evergreen Road.
Police say a relative called police to report that he was concerned about the family’s disappearance. According to authorities, all three victims were shot.
The community began to tip off immediately, which led investigators directly to the teens. Authorities said that the teens were “known to victims” but did not provide any motive.
Michael McGinnis, Detroit Police Commander, said that Caleb was only five days away from celebrating his 6th Birthday. His death was unimaginable, he said. “
He said, “I think the family was probably prepping to celebrate a birthday and tragically their plans changed.”
Chief James White stated that the arrests provide some closure for the family, but it doesn’t bring back the victims or the 5-year-old.
He said, “It’s just unacceptable for anyone to get, regardless of the issue, to get that outraged to bring a child into this and to kill them.”
