COMMERCE CITY (Co.) – Five adults and some substances that authorities called “illicit narcotics” were discovered dead in a Colorado apartment Sunday. The unit contained a fourth adult and a four-month-old baby.
Clint Nichols, Commerce City Police Chief, stated that officers responded to an unconscious party’s call at the North Range Crossings Apartments Apartments at 3 :45 p.m. They found six adults and an infant when they entered the apartment.
He said that while most people believed they were asleep, one party was awake and was taken by medical. The infant was also taken into a hospital.
Nichols stated that “Unfortunately, the five other people in the apartment were dead.”
Nichols stated that there was no evidence of blunt trauma or violent incidents among the three females and two males.
The fire department was called to perform a hazardous gas test. It was negative.
“There was something in there. He said that we don’t know what it is yet.
Nichols stated that the next step is to clean up the apartment and then police will obtain a warrant to start their investigation.
“Again, there were substances that could be classified as illicit narcotics but for me to speculate on this would be inappropriate. Nichols stated that she didn’t know. The scene was quickly swept by a hazmat team.
He stated that if someone was using drugs, it was very serious because they could not get to a telephone and dial 911 to report a medical emergency.
Nichols stated that he didn’t know the identities of the victims, but that some of them had lived in the unit.
Nichols stated that the infant seems to be doing well, and added that it wasn’t clear if the child was a boy/a girl. It was unclear whether the baby’s parents were among those who died in the apartment, he said.
“I hope that the parents weren’t there, but I have been doing this for a while enough… it would probably safe to assume the parents probably were in there and so for the baby, that’s going be a long, long time without parents.”
He stated that the adult was “lucid” talking to him.
It was not possible to immediately find the names and ages for all victims. The investigation continues.
Commerce City lies approximately 7 miles northeast from Denver.
