The Government is going to reinforce the international programs to promote regular migration already in operation in various countries of Central and South America with a new initiative agreed with the US. In this way, Spain will participate together with Canada and Mexico in the project by which the world’s leading power will establish regional centers in several countries to promote “orderly and safe” movements.
The announcement comes after US President Joe Biden invited his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sánchez, to a visit to the White House on May 12. In Washington they have “valued and appreciated the efforts” of Spain, Mexico and Canada “as key allies in this project.”
“The objective of this program is to reduce irregular migration, which in the area often translates into extremely dangerous trips and the possibility of being exploited by mafias or people traffickers, and the strengthening of regular migration routes, in collaboration with the countries of origin”, they point out in the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations. “In addition, it is an opportunity to strengthen Spain’s historic alliances with the countries of Central and South America,” they add.
The centers contemplated by the project, managed in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Acnur) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), “will make it possible to direct the flow of people with the intention of migrating towards regular routes”, such as international protection or work and residence authorizations. Spain will collaborate with this project by identifying and advising people who could make use of these regular routes.
“With this agreement, the Ministry of Inclusion continues to promote regular, orderly and safe migration paths, aligns itself with the commitments of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection and advances in the Global Compacts on Migration and Refugees”, they underline in government. At present there are already international programs to promote regular migration in operation in various countries of Central and South America, such as the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, Honduras and Guatemala.
