The Congress of Deputies put a definitive end this Thursday to the firefighter-bullfighter shows in our country and other types of recreational activities that involve the participation of people with achondroplasia or dwarfism.

Specifically, the Upper House gave the green light to the amendments previously introduced in the Senate to the bill that transposes various European Union directives and that, from now on, will put an end to recreational events that denigrate not only people with achondroplasia or dwarfism, but to all people with disabilities.

In addition, the new regulations also prohibit the participation of people with disabilities in entertainment programs on television, as well as in entertainment shows for adults or bachelor parties.

The Government celebrated this Thursday the measure, which protects the rights of people with disabilities. “In Spain there are no buffoons, there are people with dignity and rights,” considered the general director of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the Ministry of Social Rights, Jesús Martín Blanco.

Precisely this government department demanded in the summer of 2021 the cancellation of a firefighter-bullfighter show in Badajoz, understanding that it denigrated people with dwarfism. The artists responded to the Executive explaining that they had “chosen to be comedians, regardless” of their “height” or “condition”, for which they demanded to be able to continue acting normally.
