After two U.S. teams were knocked out of the men and women’s tournaments yesterday, veterans Ross (silver medalist at the London 2012 Olympics, bronze at Rio 2016) and Klineman had significant weight on their shoulders. They traded points in the first set with Cuban counterparts, but they edged ahead at 11-9. Cuba was never far behind but the Americans won the set 21-17.
Cuba responded with a 6-1 lead, including two aces, in the second. Despite some solid plays, Cuba continued to make errors, including an infamous interference at the net that resulted in a tie at 9-9, and an American advantage of 10-9. Team USA won the second set (and match) at 21-15 after trailing early.
Ross and Klineman have advanced to the quarterfinals where they will face Germany. Ross and Klineman are just three wins away of a gold medal, which would be Ross’ first.
