The foolish time starts on 11.11. at 11:11 a.m. A few guilds in the southwest also offer a foretaste of the “fifth season” – even if it officially starts later here.

Bad Waldsee (dpa/lsw) – The Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet only begins on Epiphany, January 6th – but a few fools in the southwest still have the fun on November 11th. do not take. In Bad Waldsee (Ravensburg district), for example, the “fifth season” is heralded punctually at 11.11 a.m. with the carnival alarm clock.

In Karlsruhe, the fools are getting ready to storm the town hall from 4:33 p.m. But before that, the new carnival presidents will be “christened” at the fool’s fountain. In many other regions, the guilds and clubs use the day for internal events and preparations for the coming months after the carnival associations have started.

The mask and the Häs – i.e. the costume of the fools – should not yet be seen on the streets. “Real witches and fools leave the masks in the closet until Epiphany,” said Michael Maier from the Karlsruhe Fastnacht Festival Committee. But dressing up is still allowed. “Some have a kind of suit for this day,” says Maier.

The great hope for the coming season: that Corona will not put a spoke in the wheel for the guilds. So far, the halls have been rented and the street parades are planned, said the President of the Alemannic Narrenring (ANR), Markus Stark. Now you have to see how the situation develops until January and February. The Mannheim Carnival Commission has already canceled its carnival parade for 2023. The situation was too uncertain because of the pandemic, among other things, it said on Thursday.

Fastnacht in the southwest is predominantly traditional. The jesters usually embody figures from the village and town history as well as mythical creatures and animals. They often wear elaborately carved masks with their hats. In some places, however, you can also feel the influence of the Rhenish carnival – with figures such as princes and princesses or dance guards.
