Offenburg (dpa / lsw) – A man who is said to have stolen a car with an eleven-year-old girl in the back seat near the German-French border is in custody. The 44-year-old is accused of deprivation of liberty with deprivation of minors and traffic offenses, as the police announced on Tuesday evening in Offenburg.
The girl is receiving medical treatment. The eleven-year-old may have been injured in the accidents caused by the suspect, the police reported, without giving further details.
The man, who has since been arrested, stole a car on Monday in Kehl (Ortenaukreis) under the influence of narcotics. The child’s mother went to run a quick errand and left the key in the vehicle.
The 44-year-old got behind the wheel and raced with the child over a bridge to nearby Alsace. The man was eventually arrested on the German side of the Rhine. There are said to have been three accidents while driving, two in Kappel-Grafenhausen and one in Rust.
