Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) celebrated Hanukkah in Stuttgart with members of the Jewish religious community of Württemberg. With the Stuttgart local rabbi, Yehuda Pushkin, he lit the candlestick in front of the New Palace on Tuesday evening.
Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem some 2,200 years ago. During the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights, more and more lights are gradually being lit and blessings are traditionally spoken. In the coming days, the Jewish religious community is inviting other cities to celebrate as a sign of tolerance and religious freedom; among others in Ulm and Reutlingen.
