Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Because of numerous sick employees, clinics in the southwest have to postpone interventions again. “In line with the increasing incidence in the general population, the sick reports from hospital employees are also increasing,” said the general manager of the Baden-Württemberg Hospital Society (BWKG), Matthias Einwag, the “Heilbronner Voice” and the “Südkurier” (Wednesday edition). However, there are no exact figures on the number of staff lost.

In many hospitals, decisions are currently being made on a day-to-day basis as to which operations are possible with the existing staff. “In each case, an overall assessment must be made of the existing surgical staff, the intensive care staff and the staff on the normal wards that have to admit the patients after the intensive care phase,” said Einwag. The postponement of operations is therefore part of everyday life in many clinics.

In addition, the number of intensive care beds that can be operated in the southwest has fallen compared to the previous year – from around 2,350 to almost 2,200. In addition to the corona summer wave, the reason is “above all the general lack of staff,” said Einwag.
