Schwerin (dpa/mv) – Because of the high energy prices, thousands of people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can expect a one-off heating cost subsidy in the coming days. The subsidy introduced by the federal government will be transferred to the eligible households from Tuesday, the Ministry of the Interior, Construction and Digitization announced. According to the information, 24,800 households in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will initially receive a total of eight million euros, which is the majority of those entitled to claim.

“The sharp rise in energy costs is a particularly heavy burden on low-income households. The one-off heating subsidy is intended to cushion these financial burdens,” said Building Minister Christian level (SPD) on Tuesday, according to the announcement.

According to the Ministry of Construction, single people receive 270 euros, a two-person household 350 euros and each additional person 70 euros. The subsidy is justified both with the additional payments to be expected due to the high energy prices and with the increased advance payments that have already been adjusted by utilities. According to the level, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of the first federal states to pay out the federal subsidy.

In addition to people who receive housing benefit, according to the relevant law, students and trainees are also entitled to the one-off payment if they received student loans or other state subsidies last winter.

The aid had already been decided before the war in Ukraine, but originally with significantly lower amounts. Because energy prices have risen significantly since then, the SPD, Greens and FDP have increased the subsidy. According to the federal government, around 2.1 million citizens will benefit from this, such as pensioners, single parents or people who earn little. The money should be transferred directly to the accounts without an application. The federal government wants to provide around 370 million euros for this.
