Munich (dpa / lby) – In times of high inflation, Bavarians buy less for more money. Although retail sales increased nominally in the first eleven months of last year, they fell when adjusted for inflation, as the State Statistical Office in Fürth announced on Monday. Accordingly, the increase in sales from January to the end of November compared to the previous year was 5.5 percent. After deducting the price increases, there was a real minus of 2.5 percent. Car dealers are not included in the data. Figures for the Christmas business and the whole year 2022 are not yet available.

The development over the course of the year is particularly clear: in November 2022, retailers had nominal sales of 2.5 percent more than in November 2021, but 7.2 percent less when adjusted for inflation.

The big exception are the petrol stations, which do good business despite high inflation: The “retail trade with motor fuel” recorded a nominal increase in sales of almost 20 percent in November, corresponding to a real increase in sales of 5 percent.
