Munich (dpa / lby) – According to Minister of Art Markus Blume (CSU), Bavaria’s cultural buildings need billions. “In Munich alone there is an investment requirement of roughly three billion euros,” he said in an interview with Munich’s “Abendzeitung” (Friday edition). He cited the Bavarian State Opera as an example: “A look at Stuttgart shows that such a renovation can easily cost a billion euros.”
In addition, there is the Residenztheater – “keyword stage technology”. “It will cost an average three-digit million amount,” said Blume of “AZ” – and “something must also happen” at the Marstall. The ongoing renovation of the Neue Pinakothek is now costing more than the new building 40 years ago.
Blume announced a “culture master plan”. “The wish list is just always longer than the possibilities,” he said. Times are difficult, the financial consequences of the corona pandemic and the Ukraine war are not foreseeable. “So we have to prioritize, think in timelines.”
Some refurbishments are unavoidable at some point – including university hospitals: “The complete new building in Großhadern is a billion-euro project, and the expansion from the right bank of the Isar is similarly far-reaching.”
In the interview, Blume quoted a “former Bavarian finance minister”. He advised him jokingly: “If it rains in the Haus der Kunst, I should set up a bucket and declare it art.”
