Oberstdorf (dpa / lby) – A suspected fraudulent carol singer group was on the road in the Allgäu on Epiphany. As the police announced on Saturday, three women aged 34, 32 and 31 went from house to house with two children in Oberstdorf on Friday evening, sang as a carol singer group and claimed to be collecting donations for a church community. However, one citizen became suspicious because she did not know the carol singers at the door and could not assign them to a parish, it said.
The police then found the group and, on suspicion of fraud, seized the more than 2,000 euros that the group had collected. The three women are now facing charges of fraud. The police are still looking for more witnesses.
On January 6th, Epiphany, carol singers traditionally parade through the streets in Bavaria to collect donations for disadvantaged children all over the world. They are reminiscent of the astrologers who, according to biblical tradition, brought gifts to the stable in Bethlehem shortly after Jesus was born.
