Mannheim (dpa / lby) – Johannes Geis from the second division soccer team 1. FC Nürnberg praised the work of the new coach Markus Weinzierl after progressing in the DFB Cup at SV Waldhof Mannheim. “The coach has given us a great attitude. He gives us little things that we can improve on,” said the midfielder after the 1-0 (0-0) win at the third division on Tuesday evening.

Weinzierl took over from Nuremberg after the separation from Robert Klauß and won the third game in the second game. Under his leadership, the Franconians made it into the round of 16 for the first time since the 2018/19 season. “It was a starting point to get more stability. Discipline and work must come first, that’s what I demanded. It’s nice when that leads to success,” said the coach.

On the offensive, the favored “club” hardly created any chances. An own goal by Mannheim’s Gerrit Gohlke made the decision (63′). “Defensive stability is what sets us apart,” emphasized goalkeeper Christian Mathenia. “We only allowed one chance, but we have to keep at it.” In the league, the 14th place in the table meets Hannover 96 on Saturday.
