Luciano Huerga, who was mayor of Benavente (Zamora), died this Saturday at the age of 44 at the Virgen de la Concha Hospital in the provincial capital, where he had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for two weeks due to an illness. .
Huerga’s death has been reported by the Benavente City Council itself, which has conveyed its condolences to family and friends.
Luciano Huerga was mayor of Benavente, the second largest municipality in Zamora, between 2015 and 2023, after taking office in a municipal coalition government between PSOE and IU, which he revalidated four years later for a second term until this year the pact of PP and Vox after the May elections removed him from the Mayor’s Office and since then he was the socialist municipal spokesperson.
Also after the May elections, he was elected provincial deputy and assumed the spokesperson for the socialist group in the Zamora Provincial Council during the current mandate.
The Benavente City Council and the Zamora Provincial Council have declared official mourning for three days, a period during which the flags will fly at half-mast.
Through his social networks, the acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has shown his “sadness” upon learning of the loss of “comrade Luciano Huerga”, an “example of socialist commitment and tireless fighter for the progress and well-being of Benavente.”
“My love for his family, friends and for the PSOE of Castilla y León. See you always, Luciano,” Sánchez added.
The PSOE of the capital of Zamora has expressed its “pain” for the death of the socialist through a message published on its official ‘X’ account, echoed by Europa Press. Message in which the party has also thanked Huerga for his “delivery and socialist commitment.”
For their part, other PSOE figures such as the party’s regional leader, Luis Tudanca, or the former mayor of Valladolid Óscar Puente have conveyed their condolences to Huerga’s family and have highlighted how “unfair” this loss has been.
The coffin with the mortal remains will be installed in the funeral home of the Virgen del Carmen Funeral Home in Benavente and the funeral will be held this Sunday the 5th at 5:00 p.m. in the church of Santa María del Carmen de Renueva de Benavente.
