Investigation into Alleged Sexual Assault of Virgin Australia Flight Crew Member in Fiji
A suspect known to Fijian police has been questioned over an alleged sexual assault of a Virgin Australia flight crew member amid ongoing investigations. Fijian authorities were investigating allegations the crew member was assaulted while celebrating New Year’s Eve, and separately, that another crew member was robbed. Fiji’s deputy prime minister, Viliame R Gavoka, expressed regret over the alleged incidents and offered thoughts and concerns for the alleged victims’ health and well-being. Gavoka confirmed that a suspect known to police had been questioned regarding the alleged sexual assault.
Support for the affected crew members
The airline had sent support staff to Fiji in response to reports that three crew members were allegedly attacked while out clubbing in Nadi in the early hours of 1 January. The crew members were subsequently confined to their hotel rooms near Nadi International Airport, as reported by the Fiji Sun. Gavoka clarified that the crew members were not detained, but instead were staying at a local hotel designated as crew accommodation for layovers. Crew members were advised to remain within the hotel vicinity for contactability and to assist with police investigations. They were expected to return home before the end of the week.
Ongoing police investigations
Fiji’s acting police commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, confirmed that officers were looking into allegations of theft and assault. The Flight Attendants’ Association of Australia’s federal secretary, Teri O’Toole, praised the airline’s prompt response and offered union assistance. O’Toole cautioned against speculating about the incident and emphasized the importance of respecting the crew’s privacy during the police investigation. She highlighted the concern among friends and colleagues for the affected crew members’ welfare.
Travel advisories and precautions
The Australian government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade acknowledged the reports but refrained from further comment. The Smart Traveller website advises normal safety precautions for travelers to Fiji, citing risks of robbery, theft, violent assault, sexual assault, and home invasions, particularly in urban areas and at night.
In light of these distressing events, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being and safety of all individuals, whether at home or abroad. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution, especially in unfamiliar environments. Let us extend our support and empathy to those affected, and uphold their privacy and dignity during this challenging time.
