Defense Minister Margarita Robles has distanced herself this Friday from the promise that Pedro Sánchez made to Zelenski during his second visit to Ukraine. The President of the Government affirmed that Spain was open to studying sending air aid to Ukraine; However, Robles has been very blunt with this offer: “Spain’s position is very clear: no type of combat aircraft is going to be sent”
Poland announced this Thursday that it would deliver four Mig-29 aircraft to Ukraine, different from those requested by Zelenski, but combat aircraft after all. However, Robles has insisted on not participating in sending fighters: “The ones we have require a different formation than the planes that Poland and other countries in the orbit of the former Soviet Union have,” he explained, while saying that “Spain will always be very respectful of the decisions taken by allied countries to help Ukraine”.
Asked then by EL MUNDO what Sánchez was referring to when he spoke of air aid, he insisted: “The president says that we are open to all possibilities, but the planes that Ukraine wants, Spain does not have.”
The person in charge of Defense has indeed revealed that at the end of this month or at the beginning of April the first six Leopard 2A4 battle tanks that Santa Bárbara Sistemas is repairing in Alcalá de Guadaira will be sent to Poland. “Once the repair of these six is ??finished, the repair of the other four will begin, which will make a total of 10 Leopards 2a4, which are the ones with which Spain will join the existing Leopard formation.” Last Wednesday, the 55 Ukrainian soldiers who make up 10 crews to drive these tanks that Spain is going to provide finished their training in San Gregorio.
The person in charge of Defense made these statements at the headquarters of the Ministry after the delivery of the Soldier Idoia Rodríguez award to Lieutenant Colonel Marta Esperanza Presa García.
