The “lucky ones” who have had to be at a polling station in the next municipal and regional elections, which take place on Sunday, May 28, should know that this 2023 they will charge more than in previous elections.
The BOE published on March 6 a ministerial order that raises the amount received by members of the polling stations by five euros.
In this way, those citizens who have been summoned to the tables on May 28 will go from charging 65 euros to entering 70 euros.
This money will be received by the president or president as well as the two titular members.
While the substitutes only charge if they end up having to participate. The role of the substitutes, as their name indicates, involves going to the polling station on election day at 08:00 a.m. and occupying the position of one of the main members if they have not done the same.
In addition, it is a single payment for election day, whether only one or several elections are held (in some areas of Spain they will only vote in municipal elections).
Likewise, citizens who make up a polling station should know that this income is exempt from withholdings by the Tax Agency.
Citizens selected to be presidents or members of a polling station must take into account that they are mandatory positions, according to the Electoral Law.
This implies that those who have been called and do not show up “will incur a prison sentence of three months to one year or a fine of six to twenty-four months.”
