The situation of tension in Sudan has increased to the point that the European Union is looking for a way to evacuate the citizens deployed in the country. In the case of Spain, there are 80 people deployed on the ground.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, confirmed today in Berlin that there are two Spanish planes “pre-positioned to enter Khartoum” when the conditions are right.
“Several days ago we started the evacuation plan with the Embassy, ??we have contacted all the Spaniards we know of who are in Sudan, either for residence or for tourist reasons,” said Albares. “If anyone has proof that there is a Spaniard we have not contacted and is in Sudan, they should contact the emergency telephone number,” the minister requested.
At least one A400 personnel transport plane took off this Friday at noon from the Torrejón Air Base bound for Djibouti. The aircraft will arrive at its destination around seven in the evening, and from there it must wait until it is time to evacuate the citizens.
At the moment, the airport of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, is closed due to the intensification of the fighting between the army of Abdelfata Al Burhan and the fast support forces, formed by paramilitaries commanded by Mohamed Hamdam. Several civilian airlines have already been destroyed and, as in the case of Spain, Germany has a plane waiting to enter to evacuate citizens. However, the ceasefire that was tried to be decreed was broken by the paramilitaries and the fighting has intensified.
