One of his songs shaped the 90s: “Insomnia”, an ode to insomnia. Now Maxi Jazz has died at the age of 65: in his sleep. The cause of death is unknown, Faithless’ bandmates are mourning.

The singer of the British electropop band Faithless, Maxi Jazz, is dead. The musician and DJ died at his home in south London at the age of 65, the band said on Twitter in the evening. Faithless made it to the top of the music charts in many countries in the 1990s with songs like “Insomnia” and “God is a DJ”.

Maxi Jazz, whose real name is Maxwell Fraser, “slept peacefully” on Saturday night, Faithless wrote. Maxi Jazz was a “lovable person” who had “time for everyone” and made his “profound wisdom” available to others. The band, founded in 1995, did not provide any further information on the circumstances of death.

“He gave our music the right meaning and message,” his bandmates continued. Jazz was a brilliant lyricist, DJ, moral compass and genius. Faithless – and jazz – have become world famous with their song line “I can’t get no sleep” and the following techno sample, one of the most formative in music history.

The band formed in 1995, have produced seven studio albums and headlined some of the world’s biggest festivals. Faithless were considered pioneers of dance music in the 1990s. They have headlined several major music festivals, such as in Glastonbury, England, in 2002. Her last album so far was “All Blessed”, released in 2020.
