Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – Inflation and growing online trade: Despite all the challenges, according to a survey, visitors still like to shop in downtown Frankfurt. Around 2,000 visitors to the city center took part in the survey on shopping behavior in autumn 2022, as the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) and Frankfurt Economic Development announced on Tuesday.
Those surveyed rated the attractiveness of downtown Frankfurt as “good” (2.5). The value was similar in the two previous surveys: in 2014 it was 2.5 and in 2018 it was 2.2.
Trade remains the strongest draw to visit. “It is good news that despite increasing online trade, shopping sprees are by far the most important reason for visiting downtown Frankfurt,” said Stephanie Wüst (FDP), head of the economics department.
The supra-regional importance of the city of Frankfurt has also increased. 44 percent of those surveyed lived outside of the city. Four years ago it was only 36 percent. However, the car remains indispensable for many foreigners visiting the city center, explained Ulrich Caspar, President of the Frankfurt Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
According to the data, aspects such as safety, cleanliness and parking options remain “permanent tasks”, as Alexander Theiss, Managing Director of Location Policy at the Frankfurt Chamber of Industry and Commerce, explained.
