Rüsselsheim/Darmstadt (dpa/lhe) – A toddler is believed to have drowned in a pond in Rüsselsheim (Groß-Gerau district). The one-year-old child got into the water in a park under initially unclear circumstances and died two days later in a hospital, the police in Darmstadt said on Friday. In order to clarify the background to the incident on Thursday last week (October 6), the investigators published an appeal for witnesses.
Above all, they want to find out how the child got into the water and whether the adults present in Verna Park might have violated their duty of care. The toddler is said to have been supervised by two carers from a Rüsselsheim club. Public prosecutors and police began investigations into suspected negligent homicide. The result of the autopsy was not immediately known.
