The United States Coast Guard announced on Sunday June 25 that it had opened an investigation to determine the causes of the implosion of the submersible Titan, whose five passengers died during a dive towards the wreck of the Titanic.
“My primary goal is to prevent a similar occurrence by making the necessary recommendations to improve the safety of the maritime industry worldwide,” said Jason Neubauer, Coast Guard Chief Investigator and Lead Investigator, during a briefing. a press conference in Boston.
An initial collection of evidence is underway, including “debris at the incident site”, he added. The U.S. investigation may also “if necessary” issue an opinion about possible legal action.
Another investigation opened by Canada
The Titan, about 6.5 meters long, had dived on June 18 and was expected to resurface seven hours later, but contact was lost less than two hours after it set off. Its five passengers died in the “catastrophic implosion” of the craft, the Coast Guard said Thursday.
Several pieces of debris were found on the seabed, some 500 meters from the Titanic and at a depth of nearly 4,000 meters in the Atlantic Ocean. Another investigation has been opened by Canada, which participated in the search for the submersible, Canadian authorities said on Saturday.
