The Slovak president entrusted the formation of the new government to populist Robert Fico on Monday, October 2, following the victory of his party, Smer-SD, in Saturday’s legislative elections.
“The task of the head of state is to respect the result of the democratic elections and at the same time ensure the proper functioning of our constitutional bodies,” Zuzana Caputova said in a statement before the official ceremony broadcast on television.
According to the final results announced on Sunday October 1, the national-populist party Smer-SD came in first with almost 23% of the vote. Robert Fico has already served as prime minister twice between 2006 and 2018.
