The homophobic chants sung by Rennes supporters on Sunday against Nantes will be examined on Thursday by the disciplinary committee of the Professional Football League (LFP), Agence France-Presse learned on Monday October 2 from the football governing body French professional.
In the 21st minute of the match counting for the 7th day of the French Ligue 1 championship, ultras from the Roazhon Celtic Kop resumed homophobic chants targeting the people of Nantes in general and, in particular, Matthis Abline, a former Rennes player on loan this summer but who did not appear on the match sheet.
The commission will take up this case on Thursday, said the LFP, confirming information from L’Equipe, but may not summon the Rennes club until next week.
“Duty to set an example”
A possible sanction against Rennes is not “automatic”, “the defense has rights” and a decision will therefore not be made on Thursday, explained a source within the league.
The disciplinary committee summoned Paris Saint-Germain and four of its players for Thursday: the club for homophobic chants sung by thousands of supporters on Sunday September 24 against Marseille; players for offensive chants.
Ousmane Dembélé, Randal Kolo Muani, Achraf Hakimi and Layvin Kurzawa apologized on social networks on Sunday, saying they “sincerely regret” their words, particularly in view of their “duty to set an example”.
