Schwerin (dpa/mv) – The municipality of Ummanz on Rügen is Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s most promising village. The holiday resort with around 600 inhabitants emerged as the winner of this year’s competition “Our village has a future”, as the Ministry of Agriculture in Schwerin, which is responsible for rural areas, announced on Monday.
Accordingly, Ummanz scored above all with its social and cultural life, its building design and development as well as the green design. The municipality will now represent Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the federal competition “Our village has a future” in 2023.
In the state competition, the winners of the district competitions competed against each other. Second place went to Jabel in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, third place went to Grambow in the Northwest Mecklenburg district.
An evaluation committee had visited the participating communities in the past few weeks. It consisted of representatives of the Chamber of Architects, the District Council, the Town and Municipal Council, the Mecklenburg Endmoraine Landscape Conservation Association and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. According to the information, other participants in the competition were Barnin in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, Ferdinandshof in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district and Groß Wokern in the Rostock district.
According to the ministry, the competition has existed in MV since 1991. It has been held nationwide since 1961. It used to be called “Our village should be more beautiful”.
