Greifswald (dpa / mv) – The city of Greifswald has lifted a bathing warning because of blue-green algae in the Eldena lido. Rain the previous night and a change in wind direction contributed to the disappearance of the blue-green algae, the city said on Thursday. Investigations no longer revealed any particular burdens. The health department issued a swimming warning last Friday.
The algae can cause irritation and allergic reactions on skin contact. Poisoning can occur if contaminated water is drunk. Children and infants as well as people with open wounds are particularly at risk. Animals should not drink the water either.
According to the city, special attention should be paid to the accumulation of green algae carpets and the water quality before bathing. Rapidly changing weather and wind conditions could change the situation at any time and cause accumulations of algae to wash back into the shore area.
