Schwerin/Kiel (dpa/mv) – Labor market experts expect unemployment figures to increase in July compared to the previous month. The Regional Directorate North of the Federal Employment Agency today announced the current labor market figures for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to experts, the reasons for the forecast – seasonally normal – increase between June and July include expiring training contracts, students who report temporarily unemployed after graduation, terminations at the end of the quarter and the fact that many companies are hiring for the time after postpone summer.

Already in June the number of unemployed in the north-east had risen to 57,600 on the previous month, but this was not typical. According to the head of the North Regional Directorate, Margit Haupt-Koopmann, this was due on the one hand to the reduced willingness of companies to hire in the current economic situation, and on the other hand refugees from Ukraine are now also looked after in the job centers. Overall, the unemployment rate at mid-year was 7.1 percent.

Haupt-Koopmann, who is retiring on August 1, was optimistic overall in mid-July about the development of the country’s labor market. “In particular, the federal government’s plans for the accelerated expansion of renewable energies will give the north-east another boost,” said the 65-year-old.
