Schwerin (dpa / mv) – The Barmer health insurance company calls for health care to be more gender-specific. From the point of view of the health insurance company, one of the major problems is that many scientific studies in the past were only carried out on men, and the effect on female physiology was hardly considered when preparing drug studies, among other things. “In order to achieve the best possible health care for everyone, the gender perspective is not only important for prevention, but also for diagnostics and therapy,” said Barmer state manager Henning Kutzbach at the presentation of the Barmer health report on Tuesday in Schwerin.

Peter Kupatz from the Gender and Health Working Group MV also pointed out the importance of differentiating between biological sex and gender identity, especially in the case of mental illnesses.

According to him, the data from Barmer indicate significant differences, for example when it comes to dealing with problems at work or in private life. As a result, three times more men than women are among those who die by suicide in this country.
