Kloster (dpa/mv) – Due to ice, ferry operations to the island of Hiddensee are restricted. The Hiddensee shipping company announced on its website that it was currently not possible to approach the port of Klosters up to and including Friday. Passengers are asked to switch to the ports of Neuendorf and Vitte. For the onward journey to and from the monastery, the island bus operates according to a special timetable.

A spokesman for the Federal Maritime Agency said ice at sea is currently not a problem. For smaller ships, however, icy piers could pose a problem. According to the BSH ice report from Thursday, loose new ice is drifting near Hiddensee. In some places there is already dense ice five to ten centimeters thick. The situation is similar in other Bodden waters on the coast in the north-east.

There is currently new ice or new ice formation in the fairways of the Wismar Bay and to Rostock, Stralsund and Wolgast. Freezing temperatures will continue to cause ice formation, especially in sheltered areas, into the weekend. On the outer coast, with sufficient water depth, the water temperature is still so high that no ice is likely to form there. According to the BSH spokesman, higher temperatures and thus a stop to ice formation and possibly a decline are expected again at the beginning of next week.
