Schwerin/Upahl (dpa/mv) – The container accommodation for 400 refugees in the 500-inhabitant village of Upahl (Northwest Mecklenburg) may not be built for the time being. The administrative court in Schwerin issued an interim order on Friday, according to which the district may only build if a building permit has been issued with the participation of the municipality. The work had already begun.

The court stated that the community’s right to participate had been disregarded. The special regulations for the easier construction of refugee accommodations explicitly adhered to the requirement of community agreement.

According to the information, the decision is not yet final. The district of Northwest Mecklenburg can lodge a complaint with the Higher Administrative Court in Greifswald.

The municipality of Upahl had submitted an urgent application against the district on February 23. Violent protests against the construction of the refugee accommodation have been raging in the region for weeks. According to the critics, the container village is far too big for a place like Upahl, which lacks the necessary infrastructure. In addition, there are repeated complaints that the villagers were not involved in the decision-making process and were therefore presented with a fait accompli.
