Demmin (dpa/mv) – The Leipzig Thomanerchor is a guest this Wednesday at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Classical Festival. The only concert of the well-known boys’ choir in this year’s festival season will take place in the St. Bartholomaei church in Demmin (Mecklenburg Lake District), as a spokeswoman for the festival said on Monday. Under the direction of the new Thomaskantor Andreas Reize, motets by several composers from England and Germany will be heard.
The Thomanerchor consists of 93 choir boys who live in a boarding school and also go to school in Leipzig. The choir was founded in 1212. The brick church in Demmin is considered a landmark of the former Hanseatic city on the Peene, has a 92 meter high tower and a restored Buchholz-Grüneberg organ. The choir concert in Demmin is one of the last concerts of the 2022 festival season, which ends on September 18 in Wismar.
