Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, accustomed to diatribes against the European Union, called on Saturday to fight “the exchanges of populations” orchestrated by this “federalist empire”, also accusing him of leading “an LGBT offensive”.

“The EU rejects the Christian heritage and organizes population exchanges through migration,” the ultra-conservative leader told the summer school in Baile Tusnad, in Romanian Transylvania, where a large Hungarian community resides.

Viktor Orban, who is fiercely opposed to the European asylum reform, thus referred to the “great replacement program”.

This conspiracy theory popularized by the extreme right argues that the elites would organize the replacement of European populations by non-European immigrants.

The 60-year-old leader wants to be the defender in Europe of “illiberal” values, a term he first mentioned in 2014 in this same tribune of Baile Tusnad, where he usually holds very virulent speeches.

Last summer, he caused an uproar by castigating “the mixing of races”.

In permanent conflict with Brussels, he this time attacked “federalist governance in Europe” which, according to him, led “to an irresponsible empire”. He castigated “an aging boxer”, “a rich but weak union” which is wrong to cut itself off from Russia.

Also in its sights is “the EU’s LGBT offensive against family-friendly European nations”. This is one of the recurring themes of Viktor Orban, whose government has taken several measures over the years deemed homophobic by NGOs.

“We have no choice: even if we love Europe, even if it is at home, we must fight” to defend Christian roots, insisted the nationalist Prime Minister, in power since 2010.

Under his aegis, Hungary has gradually brought checks and balances into line, regularly drawing criticism from the European Union, which has frozen billions of euros in funds due to concerns over the rule of law.
