Essen (dpa / lnw) – The Essen police apologized on Tuesday for an embarrassing Twitter glitch. On Monday evening, a tweet advertising a Bottrop beer and a café in the city of the same name could be seen on the official Twitter account “Polizei_NRW_E”. “Examination of the post revealed that when the tweet was published outside of office hours, there was a confusion between a private and an official Twitter account. We would like to expressly apologize for this,” the police tweeted in the afternoon.
An officer with access to the police’s social networks had confused their own account with that of the Essen authority and posted the tweet in their free time. “A stupid mix-up,” commented a police spokeswoman on the faux pas on request.
The evening before, the irritating Twitter post had also caught the eye of many Twitter users and was then deleted by the police. “We are currently receiving numerous inquiries about a recently published tweet. We cannot explain how this post got into our profile. Research into this is ongoing,” it said on Monday evening. The police headquarters is distancing itself from advertising on its social media channels, the officials emphasized.
