Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – North Rhine-Westphalia’s Ministry of Education wants to improve arithmetic and reading skills in elementary schools. Your department is currently developing a concept to strengthen the core competencies in the subjects German and mathematics “significantly and in the long term”, said School Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) of the “Rheinische Post” (Friday). Too many students have great difficulty with math or with reading, writing and listening. “They take what they have to catch up with them to the secondary schools and some may even have to struggle with it their whole lives.”
Existing guidelines would have to “arrive even more in the schools and be lived,” said Feller. “I believe that we have to support the teachers at the elementary schools more intensively and, if necessary, further qualify them.”
