Leverkusen (dpa / lnw) – After a long period of uncertainty, the Morsbroich Museum in Leverkusen has many plans. Under the director Jörg van den Berg, who has been in office for a year, the municipal museum wants to become a public space for urban society: a contemporary museum is to be created from a museum for contemporary art. In April, the city of Leverkusen approved a special grant of 1.9 million euros until 2026 for the implementation of the realignment.

The first year also means “an end to the negative narrative of the previous years, triggered by the unacceptable discussion about closure,” said the museum director on Tuesday. For some time, the municipal museum with its rich collection of paintings, sculptures and graphics in the listed moated castle was only perceived as a problem. An expert opinion had brought the resolution into play.

Artists who have been invited are currently presenting their works in the palace. Visitors can try out new perspectives on art and sit at a table sculpture, for example. A new phase of the presentation is scheduled to begin in September. Exhibited works will be modified or replaced.

When the new funding was decided, the head of the museum emphasized the participation of artists and actors with their ideas, images and sounds: “They make Morsbroich ring and spread out picnic blankets”. The museum owns works by Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Rosemarie Trockel, Blinky Palermo and Sigmar Polke.
