Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is donating 15 decommissioned fire brigade crew transporters and a fire engine to Ukraine. According to a submission by Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) to the state parliament, Russia’s attack on Ukraine has already damaged or destroyed important parts of the infrastructure there. Due to Ukraine’s express request for a need for rescue and fire-fighting vehicles, the free delivery is urgently needed in order to save lives and support the infrastructure with fire protection.
The 16 vehicles previously belonged to the Institute of Fire Brigades (IdF). Local fire brigades in Aachen and Bonn, for example, had already donated fire engines and ambulances to the Ukraine. The oldest of the now decommissioned state-owned transport vehicles date from 2010 and have since been replaced, as the Ministry of the Interior announced on Tuesday on request. It is currently being clarified how the vans can best be brought to the Ukraine.
