Biederitz (dpa/sa) – An 85-year-old pensioner from Biederitz (Jerichower Land) has been cheated out of a mid-five-digit sum. A stranger called him and pretended to be a police officer, the police said on Friday. The stranger therefore stated that he wanted to check which old banknotes had to be replaced with “new” ones. Whereupon the pensioner withdrew money from his account.
In another phone call, the pensioner gave the numbers of the banknotes. It was then suggested to the injured party that it would be “old” banknotes. The entire amount of money was finally handed over by the 85-year-old to a male person at his home address on Thursday. According to the police, the man said the pensioner could pick up the “new” banknotes in Magdeburg. Officials are now investigating.
