Pömmelte (dpa/sa) – The construction of the tourist information center (TIZ) at the ring sanctuary Pömmelte (Salzlandkreis) has been delayed. The opening date at the beginning of October could not be kept, said a spokeswoman for the district administration on Thursday. The reasons for this are delivery bottlenecks, a “significantly disrupted construction process” and an increased construction management effort. The goal is now to complete the building in spring 2023.
The TIZ is to be a modern rammed earth building. According to the district administration, the rammed earth technique, in which layers of earth-moist clay is filled into wooden formwork and compacted, has been widespread in central Germany since the late 18th century.
The building will be 25 meters long, five meters wide and 3.60 meters high. The construction costs around 1.8 million euros, it was said recently and could be financed with funds from the federal government, the state and the Salzland district.
The ring sanctuary in Pömmelte is a reconstructed Stone Age circular ditch. The diameter is 115 meters. According to experts, Pömmelte is comparable to the English Stonehenge – however, the facility was built in wood. The reconstruction is in the original place as it was around 4200 years ago. It opened in June 2016.
