Halberstadt (dpa/sa) – The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) supports the cleaning of the cathedral in Halberstadt. This is a grant of around 125,000 euros for a project by the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation, in which laser technology is to be used, as the DBU announced on Tuesday. The background is that environmental influences, such as sulfur dioxide, cause great damage to the medieval cathedral.

According to the DBU, laser technology has been established for cleaning the surfaces of monuments since the 1990s. However, this is complex and requires specially trained personnel. In the project, an application and setting catalog for the operation of the laser technology is now to be developed. The rescue of 14 colored choir sculptures was funded by the DBU.
