Wittenberg (dpa/sa) – The Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt is repositioning itself. The “LutherMuseen” logo is about linking the history of the Reformation even more closely with the reality of today’s visitors’ lives. “We want to rethink, be lively, exciting places of education and culture,” said the director of the foundation, Stefan Rhein, on Tuesday in Wittenberg. The aim is to appeal to even more young people and families with new formats, ideas and methods.
In its 25 years of existence, the Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt has also developed into an important place for extracurricular education with educational offers and exhibitions. Around 12,000 students come every year. A total of 3.1 million people from Germany and abroad have visited the foundation’s museums in Wittenberg, Eisleben and Mansfeld since 1997. In 2017 alone, 250,000 guests came to “500 Years of Reformation”.
The Luther memorials in Saxony-Anhalt with five museums are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The foundation maintains and researches the history of the Reformation, which is closely linked to Martin Luther (1483-1546). According to tradition, on October 31, 1517 in Wittenberg, the theologian nailed his 95 theses against the Church’s sale of indulgences to buy oneself out of sins on the door of the Castle Church. This is considered the beginning of the Reformation in church and society. Critics speak of a split.
