Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – Saxony-Anhalt’s judiciary should become more effective in the prosecution of hate crimes – when the planned central office at the Halle public prosecutor’s office will come is still open. The legal committee of the state parliament heard experts on Wednesday and wants to deal with the topic again in March. Minister of Justice Franziska Weidinger (CDU) explained that a concept had been developed and could be implemented. The topic is important because there are many people affected and a high number of unreported cases can be assumed. The public prosecutor’s office in Halle is to take care of the topic of hate crime with additional staff nationwide.

From the point of view of the domestic policy spokeswoman for the Left Group, Henriette Quade, deficits in the state authorities in dealing with hate crimes became clear in the hearing. “There is a lack of human resources, technical possibilities and skills in the police and public prosecutor’s offices,” said Quade. Hate, discrimination and violence affect the digital space, but also analogue life. She criticized that the coalition factions pushed the issue to March 2023.
