Dresden (dpa/sn) – The left-wing faction in the Saxon state parliament is demanding information from the government on the processing of the jewel theft from the Dresden Green Vault three years ago. In an application published on Thursday, she demands a detailed interim report on the knowledge gained and evaluated by the government about the burglary as well as the legal, technical, financial, personnel and official consequences.
“No one has yet taken political responsibility,” the blame for security gaps has been pushed back and forth between the interior and culture ministries, the state real estate company and the state art collections (SKD) Dresden for years, said parliamentary group leader Rico Gebhardt. “We are experiencing an unprecedented flight from responsibility .” The government should therefore disclose the results of the clarification and determination of the circumstances, background, procedure, processes, the consequences for the art and cultural assets in Saxony and those involved in the crime.
Questions are asked about identified deficiencies, omissions and deficits, also in organizational and personnel terms, which were partly responsible for the theft of historical jewelery made of thousands of diamonds and brilliants on November 25, 2019. It was “obvious” that they “at least” favored him, said Gebhardt. “Our impression is that those responsible did not do everything they could to prevent a burglary.” The parliamentary group also doubts that the necessary consequences have been drawn “to prevent such cases in the future”.
Gebhardt also criticized the fact that the parliament “to this day does not know exactly how the security failure came about”. And as far as the conclusions are concerned, the only thing known to him so far is “that work on the residential palace was carried out behind screens for a long time.”
